| timbury | Dec 28, 2007 8:50am | | Is anyone using, familiar with, or even heard of the GIMP? It's a great open source Photoshop clone, completely free and runs on a number of platforms. gimp.org [gimp.org] for more info. I've used Photoshop, love it but not it's price tag. |

Not a bad program though, or so I've heard.
I'm a photoshop user for years, so it's hard to learn new programs now. |

I usually suggest GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) for those who can't or won't pay the $600 price tag for PS. Also, for those on *nix systems who don't want the overhead of an emulator or virtual machine, GIMP is the answer. There is a mod available that will seem more familiar to PS users: GimpShop! It presents the GIMP elements in a parent window similar to the PS layout. GIMP has plugins of it's own and can use many of the available PS plugins, too. Ok, enough for now. I guess you can tell, I'm a GIMP fanatic. ;-) |

| mrstarstuff | Jan 21, 6:08am | This is a related question: I have just put Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8 on a new laptop and I also have the set-up for The Gimp. Is there any need for both of those? Are their capabilities mutual, overlapping or mutually exclusive? I use Irfanview for routine photo handling and slight manipulation, but I'm also interested in doing some drawing/painting.
